OHI Hosts “Cupcake Wars”
Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI), a federally qualified health center (FQHC), recently hosted the “Cupcake Wars” among its employees to determine who the top bakers are at the three OHI sites: 101 Second Street, Lakewood; and 301 Lakehurst Road, Toms River; and 333 Haywood Road, Manahawkin.
Employees entered their specialty cupcake treats from the health conscious to the sweet and sugary. Judges included Warren Sherard, chairman of the OHI board of directors; Deb Levinson, member of the board of directors; Dr. Theresa Berger, CEO of OHI; Dr. Nancy Tham, CMO (Chief Medical Officer); and Bridget Hogan, COO.
At the end of the “Cupcake Wars,” everyone enjoyed the results. The “Cupcake Wars” were part of the employee events for National Health Center Week, the early part of August. National Health Center Week is spearheaded in New Jersey by the New Jersey Primary Care Association (NJPCA), a nonprofit corporation that represents the organizational providers and affiliates of community-based ambulatory health care statewide.
The winners were Michele Moeltner, LPN (Licensed Nurse Practitioner), Lakewood site, and Lynn Walker RN (Registered Nurse) at the Toms River/ Stafford site. Moeltner’s creation of a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Cupcake, topped with an edible-like hamburger, received a perfect score for creativity. The judges said, “The perfect surprise in this chocolate brownie cupcake was the peanut butter cup filling! The mini hamburger topping added an extra sweet treat, created with vanilla wafers, sesame seeds, icing, and coconut shavings for lettuce.”
Walker’s cupcake creation, Apple Cake with caramel frosting topped with a cinnamon stick, was made entirely from scratch, including the caramel drizzle and the icing. Walker said if she did not become a nurse, she would have become a baker.
