Bridgewater NJ – Financial Resources Federal Credit Union recently participated in an internship program that links credit unions and people with disabilities. The program called BEST (Building Economic Strength Together) aims to help dispel myths about hiring disabled persons and aims to give resume experience to people who often find it difficult to gain employment because of their disabilities. An intern was placed in Financial Resources IT department.

Kevin Buist, senior vice president, technology of Financial Resources said, “Our experience with the BEST program was great.  It was a pleasant surprise to find that our intern had previous experience in IT. He was able to help us complete a few projects that have been on the back burner, and we were able to introduce him to some new technologies.  His cooperative attitude and great work ethic made it easy to integrate him into our technical team. We’re really going to miss him.”

National Disability Institute and Allies Inc., a New Jersey-based training group for people with disabilities, places interns with a disability into New Jersey credit unions to enhance staffing needs, provide member service or assist with any special project.

Internships last for six weeks, with interns working a maximum of three days or 22 hours per week.  Because of this outstanding opportunity, interns are motivated to learn, eager to work, and committed to providing the maximum assistance.

BEST is a shared program from the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions.
