Posted on August 21, 2023 By

Alex Mann, a 23-year-old with autism from Chester County, Pennsylvania, has made it his goal to visit as many police departments as possible to raise awareness about autism and show support for law enforcement officers. Mann visited the Lakewood Police Department, his 400th police agency in five different states, on August 8, 2023.

Mann first met with Chief of Police, Gregory H. Meyer, and the Community Relations Unit, along with other important members, for coffee and pastries. Afterward, Mann had an exclusive tour of the police department. The Community Relations Unit then took Mann and other key members of the department on a patrol ride-along in the BearCat throughout the Town of Lakewood Township, stopping by various landmarks. They also visited the Fire Department Local 80 to meet with Chief Jon Yahr for a tour and The Sheldon Wolpin Lakewood Historical Museum Police Memorial Wall for some photos.

The event ended with a light fare, a specialty cake, and a plaque presentation. Mann received police patches, challenge coins, police blouse, and Lakewood Township logo memorabilia as a token of appreciation for his achievements.

Chief Gregory H. Meyer said, “On behalf of the men and women of the Lakewood Police Department, we were honored by your visit and for your dedication to honoring those that serve in the Law Enforcement profession. We hope you enjoyed your day as well as your visit here, which also marks your 400th department visit, quite a milestone. Thank you Alex for letting us help support your journey while making some great memories!”

Special recognition goes to The Community Relations Unit led by Sergeant Kenny Burdge and Detective Sergeant Jeannette Shimonovich, Ptl. Jason Yahr, and Ptl. Kevin Bell.

Local establishments showed their appreciate by donating a billboards display @Scoop Outdoor; donated pastries, wraps, and iced coffee from HOT BAGELS (232 Second Street); Delicious Cake, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish-Lakewood; and a tour of Sheldon Wolpin Lakewood Historical Museum Police Memorial Wall by Jimmy Esposito.

DANGERS OF LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

Posted on August 15, 2023 By

Contact: Yehuda Beer, Fire District Administrator 732-364-5151

DANGERS OF LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries have increased dramatically in Lakewood. These rechargeable batteries are found in electric bikes and scooters, cars, laptops, tablets, phones, and common household devices. Considering these recent fires, the Lakewood Board of Fire Commissioners in conjunction with Fire Chief Jonathan T. Yahr and the members of the Lakewood Fire Department, offer the following information and safety tips.

ALWAYS
• ALWAYS purchase and use devices certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory UL (Underwriters Laboratory) and the most common laboratories.

• ALWAYS follow the manufacturer’s instructions for: charging and storage.
• ALWAYS use the correct battery, cord, and power adapter.
• ALWAYS plug directly into a wall electrical outlet for charging.
• ALWAYS keep batteries and devices at room temperature.
• ALWAYS store and/or charge batteries away from anything flammable.
• ALWAYS keep away from heat sources.
• ALWAYS bring batteries to Recycling Centers.

NEVER
• NEVER use aftermarket (or generic) batteries or chargers.
• NEVER plug into a power strip or overload an outlet.
• NEVER overcharge or leave battery charging overnight.
• NEVER charge a battery or device under your pillow, on your bed, or near a couch.
• NEVER leave e-bikes or e-scooters unattended while charging.
• NEVER block your primary way in or out of a room/space.
• NEVER place batteries in Trash or Recycling bin. It is illegal.

Damaged or unstable batteries and improper charging, storage or disposal can cause the batteries to overheat, leading to an explosive, aggressive fire that spreads rapidly, can reignite and is challenging to extinguish.

Lithium-ion battery fires are very dangerous. Water may not prevent a battery from burning and spreading. Battery cells are known to explode and quickly spread to another battery. It can spread to other devices. These batteries may continue to generate heat even when there is no visible sign of fire. Once heat reaches a certain level fire may reignite on the battery and surrounding area.

Fire Extinguishers do not work on lithium-ion batteries fires. If you observe a lithium-ion battery fire, leave the area, CLOSE the door, and call 911 immediately.

Reignition of lithium-ion batteries is common. Lithium-Ion batteries are known to unexpectedly re-ignite (without warning) minutes, hours and even days after all visible fire has been put out.

Lithium-ion batteries can enter an uncontrollable, self-heating state. This can result in the release of gas, cause fire and possible explosion.

August Shows at the Strand Theater, Lakewood

Posted on July 26, 2023 By

The Strand Center for the Arts, 400 Clifton Avenue, Lakewood, N.J., is featuring two shows this August: The “Cast” of Beatlemania, August 18; and Classic Skynyrd Live with Special Guest Southern Steel, August 19.

Beatles music set the pop rock standard for most of the 1960’s. The “Cast” of Beatlemania recalls the memories of that exciting era when the Fab Four ruled the world of rock ‘n’ roll. Probably the most celebrated of rock groups, The Beatles dominated rock music from the early 1960’s until they formally disbanded in 1970. Originally inspired by such U.S. performers as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Buddy Holly, The Beatles recaptured most of the freshness and excitement of the earliest days of rock ‘n’ roll.

Classic Skynyrd Live, presented by James Damico’s Sun Concerts, performs all of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s fan favorites, from Free Bird, Simple Man, That Smell, Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, Call Me the Breeze, I Know a Little and so many more. Southern Steel performs spot on renditions of the Allman Brother’s Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, and many more.

For tickets or more information, visit www.Strand.org. or call 732-367-7789. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; shows begins at 8:00 p.m.

COVID POLICY: The Strand has continued to monitor local, county and state COVID-19 metrics and guidelines with the goal of reducing risk and maintaining the health and well-being of our audiences, artists, and staff.
